2021年度は本研究プロジェクトの参加者が、それぞれの基礎的研究を継続し、学会発表や論文の公表を行うとともに、オンライン形式で「常識と啓蒙研究会」を開催し、その研究成果を共有し、議論することができた。また、研究会には関連分野の研究者を講師として招くことで、研究をより多角的に深めることもできた。具体的には、（１）ウィトゲンシュタイン哲学における「常識」と倫理の関係に関する分析、特に『論理哲学論考』を中心とした前期ウィトゲンシュタイン哲学におけるその展開の検討、（２）偶然性と常識の関係に関する哲学的検討、（３）アダム・スミス、エドマンド・バーク、ジョン・デューイ、モンテスキューなど、本研究プロジェクトが主題としているスコットランド常識学派からプラグマティズムに到る哲学史、思想史と近接する重要な哲学者、思想家の見解の検討、（４）ウィトゲンシュタイン哲学とパフォーマンス心理学の関係の検討を通した常識と創造性の関係についての研究、などを行うことができた。それにより、(i)常識哲学やプラグマティズムとの関係が深いウィトゲンシュタインの後期哲学の前提としての前期哲学に対する理解が深まり、また(ii)近現代の英語圏の常識哲学の位置づけを純粋な哲学的テキストの分析だけでなく、政治経済思想、歴史思想、などの複数の視点から分析することの必要性が改めて確認された。更には(iii)後期ウィトゲンシュタイン哲学のような常識を重視する哲学が創造性というものを否定するものではなく、むしろ、創造性の基盤として「常識」を構成する実践なども位置付けることができるということも明らかになった。その他、研究上のポイントとして「常識的実在論（common sense realism）」という観念を哲学史、思想史的研究を背景として、その現代的意義を明らかにするという点を確認することができた。

This study reinterprets the entire picture of the history of American political thought from the perspective of contemporary study of history of political thought. It emphasized especially the traditions of republicanism, constitutionalism, and liberalism, and also focused on pragmatism, as an original philosophical tradition in America.
In the founding period of the United States, the relationship with European republicanism and constitutionalism was found to be much closer than ever known. It was shown that pragmatism had a great influence on American liberalism and democracy, besides its philosophical significance. It was also revealed that Rawls's theory of justice had various developments today, especially in the field of analytical political philosophy.

This research focused on clarifying from the perspective of the history of ideas that conservative ideas in the United States were derived from the historical background of British political thoughts, and that they were developed through the critical interaction with radical ideas including Trotskyism and Marxism. The research found that while some conservatives, Willmoore Kendall and M. E. Bradford argued the theoretical continuity between the Declaration of Independence and British political tradition, others of which Harry V. Jaffa was a representative vehemently claimed the Declaration of Independence signaled a radical beginning for America. The research also found that conservative ideas in the United States have been influenced by both the concept of the managerial class which was elaborated by James Burnham and that of the new class that Milovan Geras introduced to the western intellectuals in the 1950s.

We had released our research outcomes constantly. First of all, we held research workshop "Common Sense and Enlighhtenment" twice an year. Secondly, in March 2018, we coordinated the session "Common Sense and Convention" at the 42nd annual conference of Japanese Society for British Philosophy and gave our reserach presentations. Thirdly, in October 2019, we coordinated Japanese and American researchers for the international symposium held by Musashino University, and gave research presentations.Fourthly, we published "Can we open up a new World by 'Common Sense'?" (in Japanese) from Koyo Shobo as the final report of our research project.

In this research, we explored the common sense philosophies that can also be characterized as "enlightenment" in the British traditions. Our studies include the study of (i) the common sense philosophy in Scottish enlightenment, (ii)the common sense philosophies of 20th century Cambridge philosophers such as G.E. Moore and Wittgenstein, and (iii) the influence of the Scottish philosophy to the thoughts of the Founding Fathers of America.
We published several papers on these topics as well as made presentations in conferences. Also, we organized a symposium at the 40th annual Conference of The Japanese Society for British Philosophy, and we have edited The report of the research results in which papers of our fellow scholars are included.

本研究は、ベンジャミン・フランクリンの特殊「コモン・マン」的な社会・政治思想の特質を把握しようとした。彼は体系的理論家ではなく、建国期アメリカの一般人に共有されていた生きた実践知の体現者である。本研究は、彼の実践知を理解するため、フランクリンの「主体の構造」に遡って彼の思想を把握する方法を採用した。
1.まず主にM・ウェーバーのプロテスタンティズム論を参照し、フランクリンの「主体の構造」をピューリタン的なそれとの連続性において捉えうる(Doing Good to "the Whole"をする自己を確証する主体、というフォームを共有)ことを確認した。また、このDoing Good理念がフランクリンの社会的・政治的な認識・実践を決定的に方向づけていることを示した。具体的には(1)Doing Goodする力を増すために多様な自発的結社の自律的・自発的活動を促す。(2)中産的生産者層の職業労働をDoing Goodとして捉え、そのネットワークの上につくられる市民社会=「ネーション」をあるべき「全体」とみる。以上よりフランクリンが、Doing Goodする人々ならば地位も人種も関係なく平等に「全体」の構成員とみなしたことが示された。フランクリンにおける「コモン・マン」の世界・意識の成立である。2.更に、フランクリンにDoing Good理念を直接に与えたピューリタン聖職者コットン・マザーを分析し、(1)フランクリンの「主体の構造」はマザーのそれともフォームを共有していること、しかし(2)マザーからフランクリンへのDoing Good理念の継承は、「全体」イメージがよりダイナミック、平等、自律的になるという変容を含むこと(「世俗化」=『近代』化)を示した。3.最後に、「コモン・マン」の形成者としての政治的実践((1)「立場の相互交換」によって公正さを学習させる、(2)『自伝』で多様なDoing Goodを一般人に提示し、それを模倣させる)が彼に独自の「コモン・マン」的性格の集中的表現であることを確認した。
