    &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;It is said that Korea and Japan have some similarities in terms of education. One example is that students study in preparation to take the university entrance examinations, and the curriculum of most schools is determined by the contents of these entrance examinations to a large extent. In addition, many parents enroll their children in cram schools from an early age. There is a considerable difference, however, in terms of when to start English education. In Korea, present college students started to learn English when they are at elementary school as it is a required subject. In Japan, though, the number of students who studied English from such an early time is limited. <br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The purpose of this study is to compare the intensity of motivation to study English and the kind of motivation between Korean college students and Japanese college students.

    The role of the World Wide Web in English education is increasing significantly. As a result, a collaborative learning environment where students are cast in the role of both student and teacher has developed. This paper reports on a study that examined the cultural dimension of e-mail correspondence between Japanese junior college students and their fellow correspondents throughout the world. In this keypal project, students identified their own keypals who shared similar interests and were free to converse about any topic. The instructor's role was to answer student's questions, as opposed to correcting their errors. It should be noted that student's questions were asked and answered in English using a class email list provided by the instructor as part of the course environment. The students shared cultural information they learned from their keypals with their classmates using the list. At the end of the course, the students were required to write a report describing cultural information learned from their keypals and reflect on their overall experience. The instructor evaluated student performance based on a student's commitment to the project as expressed in their effort to communicate with their keypals in English. It can be concluded from the study that the keypal project served as a stimulus to better cross-cultural understanding. In addition, it is evident that the class e-mail list multiplied the effect of this experience by placing students in the role of educating others about their cross-cultural experiences.

    This paper summarizes the presentation the author made at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Association of Practical English held at Waseda University, Tokyo in September 1998.<br>In order to know the practicability of the business English textbooks in Japan in terms of business correspondence, the author surveyed eighteen textbooks published between 1958 and 1998, together with several business English reference books. A comparison was made between the contents of these textbooks and reference books, and those in the actual business correspondence the author received between 1994 and 1998. The research was made regarding the following: 1) style, 2) letter elements, and 3) punctuation.<br>The author first found that there are some discrepancies between the styles quoted in the textbooks and those actually in use, and also that the more economical styles (i. e. simple, non-time consuming) tend to be used. The author contends that the name of styles should be standardized. The second finding is that there is not a big difference between the letter elements used in the textbooks and those actually in use, although the nomenclature is not standardized and there are various Japanese translations of these elements. The third finding is that among the various kinds of complimentary closes in the textbooks, only a few are very common in actual business correspondence. The author also shows that the most popular ones are changing.<br>To conclude, the author asserts that it is necessary to teach the students the knowledge and skills needed in doing business correspondence in contemporary international society so that they can utilize in the workplace what they acquired while at college. To realize this, we teachers should look at the actual business correspondence as well as textbooks which are sometimes imperfect.
