    Acetone is a well-known biogas involved in lipid metabolism and is considered a potential biomarker for diabetes. However, the conventional detection methods for acetone face the limitations of large size, complex usage, and cross-sensitivity. In this study, we developed a portable device comprising a porous colorimetric acetone analytical chip composed of 2-nitrophenyl hydrazine and porous glass. The analytical chip was highly sensitive and selective for acetone because it was based on the chemical reaction between acetone and hydrazine in a nanoporous material, which provides a large surface area. The device consisted of a 450 nm laser light source and a photodiode detector with a volume of less than 40 mL. Acetone gas was measured in the atmosphere for 10 min using the developed flow–stop method. The measurable acetone concentration ranged from 0 to 6.0 ppm with a detection limit of 0.22 ppm. We successfully conducted a feasibility study using human exhaled breath and analyzed the relationship between exercise and the acetone concentration in the breath. An upward trend in exhaled acetone levels was seen post-exercise for each individual.

    We measured an indoor nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) concentration in the winter of Sendai by using a sensor element that employed a diazo coupling reaction in a porous glass. The questionnaire survey and measurement results of 95 houses were gathered, and the obtained results were that the average NO<sub>2</sub> concentration was 91.6 ppb indicating high indoor air concentration, and the percentage of the data that exceed environmental standard value of NO<sub>2</sub> (60 ppb) was 53.7%. Especially, the higher NO<sub>2</sub> concentration than the environmental standard and the large percentage of the data that exceed environmental standard has been measured at both the house with an oil stove for heating (150.9 ppb and 81.8%) and the house with an oil fan heater for heating (139.0 ppb and 80.0%). On the other hand, the lower NO<sub>2</sub> concentration (59.5 ppb) than environmental standard has been measured at the houses with 24-hour ventilation system. Considering these results, ventilation was an important factor to reduce an indoor NO<sub>2</sub> concentration, and the indoor NO<sub>2</sub>, which was mainly emitted from the combustion-type heater, was extremely high in the case of insufficient ventilation. In Sendai area, it was found that people did not pay attention to ventilation in the winter, because the outside temperature was very low and the ventilation would sometimes lead a decrease in indoor temperature. Therefore, people tend to live in the indoor condition containing the higher NO<sub>2</sub> concentration than that in other area of Japan.

    We have developed a portable device for formaldehyde monitoring, and have carried out indoor air monitoring in several houses. The absorbance difference of the developed sensor element was measured at regular intervals in the monitoring device and converted into the formaldehyde concentration. This was possible because the rutidine derivative that was formed as a yellow product of the reaction between β-diketone and formaldehyde was stable in the sensor element. The device contained an LED as a light source and photodiodes as photo-detectors. It was sufficiently small (10 cm × 10 cm × 4 cm) to be installed at a desired location in the house. In addition, the device was able to monitor a closed area without a convection flow, because it did not use a pump for air sampling. The detection limit was 5 ppb x hour, and we estimated it took about 1 hour to detect a formaldehyde concentration of 94%.<br>The developed sensor device was small and easy to use and we successfully carried out hourly formaldehyde monitoring using our monitoring device under several indoor conditions. We found that a high formaldehyde concentration could be measured in a room containing furniture and clothes. We also found that, although the formaldehyde concentration decreased rapidly when ventilation was provided, it recovered rapidly in several hours when we stopped ventilating the room.

    We have developed a sensor element for detecting formaldehyde using a reaction between β-diketone and formaldehyde. We estimated the formation and decomposition reaction rate constants of pyridine derivatives (yellow dye) on the sensor element, and also estimated interference gases. We found that the formation reaction rate constant on acetylacetone sensor element was three times than that on 1-phenyl-1, 3-butandione's one, and absorbance was 2.4 times than that of 1-phenyl-1, 3-butandione's one. It means that the color of the acetylacetone element rapidly changes to deeper yellow when it is exposed to formaldehyde. The decomposition reaction occurs on the acetylacetone sensor element, on the other hand, only the formation reaction occurs on the 1-phenyl-1, 3-butandione element, and the pyridine derivative is stable at least for one week. Therefore it was found that the 1-phenyl-1,3-butandione and acetylacetone elements were suitable for long hours measurement and short hours measurement, respectively. We also found that no interference gases existed in the normal atmospheric condition.<BR>The developed sensor element was small, flat plate, pumping-free, and accumulated type, therefore we could set that at the desired space where we wanted to know the formaldehyde concentration, for arbitrary period. Then the absorbance change of the sensor element could be converted into the formaldehyde concentration using the preliminarily calculated calibration curve.<BR>We successfully measured the formaldehyde concentration in closed space, because the developed sensor worked without a pumping unit.

    A nitrogen dioxide (NO<SUB>2</SUB>) monitoring system with an irreversible sensor has been developed for measuring small area variations of NO<SUB>2</SUB> concentrations. The irreversible sensor consists of porous glass, as a substrate, impregnated with diazocoupling reagents. The NO<SUB>2</SUB> concentration is determined from the sensor's light transmittance. The developed system demonstrated high sensitivity: NO<SUB>2</SUB> levels of 2 ppbs* hour were detected. The correlation coefficient for NO<SUB>2</SUB> concentrations obtained with this device and that obtained with a commercial NO<SUB>2</SUB> analyzer was 0.84.<BR>Four of these devices were set up at the Morioka Experimental Area and ambient NO<SUB>2</SUB> concentrations recorded from May 1999 to December 2001. The device contained a modem, through which the data was transferred to a central PC. The NO<SUB>2</SUB> concentrations web calculated from data recoved on the central PC. Then the data meresent to mere server, and finally opened on HP. Since there was no serious trouble at the measurement site, we could gather data for two and ahatf years. It was found that the NO<SUB>2</SUB> level fluctuated throughout the year, and the general pattern consisted of high levels in the winter, low levels in the summer, and relatives high level in spring. It was also found that the daily patterns of NO<SUB>2</SUB> concentrations in summer were fairly different from thoge in winter.

    We have developed an NO detection method with highly sensitivity (several ppb) using the combination of two-types of passive-type sensing chip. NO is one kind of biogases and included with high concentrations in exhale air of patients suffering from asthma. The calibration curve of the developed method in the range from 10 ppb to 200 ppb, which was covered the NO concentration from healthy subject’s exhaled air to respiratory disease’s exhaled air, was also obtained, and that was verified by measuring the actual human breath. In addition, we could carry out the comparison of NO concentration between the exhaled gas and the skin gas using the developed sensor chip, because passive sensing chip had an advantage for measuring the skin gas.

    A carbon dioxide (CO2) recycle system utilizing photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to gas fuels such as methane (CH4) was developed. In this system, CH4 can be produced by CO2 photoreduction under deep-ultraviolet light irradiation on an Au-nanoparticle-deposited TiO2 (Au/TiO2) catalyst. We introduced mid-infrared laser irradiation for the excitation of CO2 on the Au/TiO2 catalyst surface in order to improve the CH4 production efficiency. As a result, the CH4 production efficiency can be increased by a factor of 1.7, compared with that without the CO2 excitation. The result of observations of Au/TiO2 catalysts by using a transmission electron microscope suggests that further improvement in the CH4 production efficiency can be obtained by optimizing the deposition of Au nanoparticles on the TiO2 catalyst.
