We developed a Virtual Chameleon that is a wearable system to provide independent fields of view to the eyes in previous work. The Virtual Chameleon artificially enables the user to vary the directions of the visual axes of both eyes to arbitrary directions independently and to perceive each field of view simultaneously. Although humans move both eyes in various styles of eye movements, attitude control of camera platforms of the system were only corresponding to smooth eye movements because a control method of the system depends on only arm movements. It was assumed that visual stimuli induced by various eye movements affect predominance occurred in binocular rivalry. Therefore, in this work, we focused on patterns of eye movements and control method, and implemented additional functions to make users control Virtual Chameleon in various ways by building trackball devices into the system.

Excreting is one of the most important living activities for the elderly who are in need of nursing care. It is difficult to predict when the elderly will need help of caregivers to go to the lavatory because excreting is a purely physiological requirement. The elderly sometimes needs to wear an adult diaper or set a portable toilet in their living space but they make the elderly uncomfortable and insanitary. To solve these problems, we developed a mobile toilet system equipped with omnidirectional wheel. As for toilet seat, a surface of buttock is placed into immediate contact with a toilet seat during elimination. It will become possible to monitor heath condition of a user by implementing sensors in toilet seat. In this study, we also equipped the mobile toilet with a sensor system.

We developed a system that provides a human user with the artificial oculomotor ability to control their eyes independently, which was named Virtual Chameleon after Chameleons. The successful users of the system were able to actively control visual axes by manipulating 3D sensors held by their both hands, to watch independent view fields presented to the left and right eyes, and to look around as chameleons do. Although it is thought that the movements of camera angle of Virtual Chameleon corresponds to smooth movements on human eye movements, the system did not have functions to control angles of cameras corresponding to saccadic eye movements. We implemented functions to control angles camera rapidly corresponding to saccadic eye movements in Virtual Chameleon. In this paper, we performed fundamental experiments to evaluate effects on the user's visual capabilities to investigate human performance.

A significant number of the elderly have difficulties in going to a lavatory by themselves. Excreting is a purely physiological requirement and it is difficult to predict when the elderly will need help of caregivers to go to the lavatory. The elderly sometimes needs to wear an adult diaper or set a portable toilet in their living space but they makes the elderly uncomfortable and insanitary. Consequently, we proposed a mobile toilet system for solving these problems. The developed mobile toilet system waits for a calling signal from the elderly at a standby room. When control signals are received, the toilet system approaches the elderly. The past system equipped a two-wheel drive system. Considering a small space such as Japanese style house, two-wheel drive is not suitable for veering in narrow space. In this study, we developed a mobile toilet system with omni-directional mobile mechanism by employing omni-wheel.

We have been developing a system, named Virtual Chameleon, that provides a human user with the artificial oculomotor ability to control their eyes independently. Virtual Chameleon consists of two independently controlled CCD cameras, a 3D tracking sensor system and a head-mounted display. The Virtual Chameleon control independently postures of two cameras to follow the sensors of the 3D tracking system smoothly. It is thought that those independent fields of view the user of Virtual Chameleon watched corresponding to pursuit movements on human eye movements, but it did not have functions of saccadic movements and compensatory movements. In this paper, we describe a fundamental examination to add functions to provide the user fields of view based on saccadic movements to Virtual Chameleon.

To investigate flexible adaptation of visual system, we developed a system to provide a user an artificial oculomotor function to control directions of both eyes. We performed fundamental experiments to evaluate capability of adaptation to use of Virtual Chameleon and effects on the user's capabilities. Eleven healthy volunteers with normal and corrected-to-normal vision participated in the experiments. The experiments were tests to find out each position of targets put in both side of a subject. We obtained accuracy rates and time intervals to find out target positions as experimental results. The results showed all of volunteers became able to actively control independent visual axes and correctly understood two different views by using Virtual Chameleon, even though two independent view fields yielded binocular rivalry to volunteers and binocular rivalry reduced human capabilities compared to cases without Virtual Chameleon.

Anatomical characteristics and monocular movements of chameleons are similar to higher primates because the eye of the chameleon has a central fovea, performs saccadic fixation movements, and obeys Listing's Law, but motor system and cognitive functions of the human differ completely from those of chameleons. Human vision has capability to adapt to visual stimulation with spatial inversion when the man wears glasses to give images upside down for long periods. As with the adaptation to vision with spatial inversion, giving a human oculomotor ability to control visual axes of both eyes arbitrarily as chameleons do will raise interesting question on adaption to provided two independent view fields. In this paper, we developed a portable device that provides two independent view fields to both eyes of human for long periods, using two CCD cameras independently controlled and a head-mounted display, which was named "Virtual Chameleon".

Chameleons locate the prey with large and independent saccades of the highly mobile eyes. Human cannot control both eyes independently, and cannot perceive independent view fields for both eyes. But we assumed that the human becomes able to perceive the images for both eyes and control visual axes with the appropriate support. In this paper, we describe a comprehensive system to provide two independent view fields to both eyes of human, using two CCD cameras independently controlled and a head-mounted display. Each camera was set to track the movement of the finger so that view fields can take any arbitrary direction. Most of subjects became able to control and understand two different view fields independently after some practice.

Chameleons locate the prey with large and independent saccades of the highly mobile eyes. Human cannot control both eyes independently, and cannot perceive independent view fields for both eyes. But we assumed that the human becomes able to perceive the images for both eyes and control visual axes with the appropriate device. In this paper, we describe a comprehensive system which provides two independent view fields to both eyes of human, using two CCD cameras independently controlled and a head-mounted display. Each camera was set to track the movement of the finger so that view fields can take any arbitrary direction. Most of subjects became able to control and understand two different view fields independently after some practice.

Injection is the most commonly performed invasive procedure in the hospital. However, the introduction of a needle into a vein in the injection still correlates closely with clinical skills and experiences of clinical workers without relation to advances in medical technology. It is often difficult to find the vein and to insert the needle into the blood vessel, especially if the patient is an infant whose pannicule is thick and blood vessel is thin compared with adults. Multiple failed attempts at needle insertion can incerase patient discomfort with traumas. Therefore, this paper describes the results of preliminary experiments to develop an assistive device tht enables medical staff to achieve an accurate needle puncture into a vein even if the blood vessel is difficult to identify.

We have been developing a network-based medical care supporting system called the Hyper Hospital. The Hyper Hospital is constructed on the computer based network whose interface is the virtual reality dedicated to the patients. As a part of the progress, we have been developing a wearable information system which enables a care-giver to operate various support devices connected to the network. In this study, we focused on the development of a wearable computer-based home care support system. In our system, the wearable computer consists of a network built in a jacket. Every necessary function is implemented by each dedicated small computers connected to the in jacket network. It is easy to append a new function to the system by adding one SBC (Single Board Computer) for the purpose. It was shown that the network constituted by such a set of SBCIs with a single function becomes a highly efficient information system.

We have established integrated nano-biomechanics by modeling multi-scale physical and biomedical phenomena from the molecular level. By using the established model, we succeeded to numerically simulate various diseases, such as an infectious disease, and developed novel methodologies for medical diagnosis and treatments based on quantitative predictions. Besides, we developed biochips to separate or detect cancer cells and bacteria. These findings have been published as 50 peer reviewed journal papers.

We got an idea from their capabilities to move their both eyes independently and developed a system to provide a user an artificial oculomotor function to control directions of both eyes, which was named Virtual Chameleon. In this work, we focused on influence of saccadic eye movements on visual perception with binocular rivalry, and implemented a new function to make users control the system in various styles attitude control of camera platforms.
We performed experiments to evaluate effects on implementation of artificial saccadic eye movements. We obtained accuracy rates and response times to find out target positions. It was indicated that user could look around and distinguish independent views as previous wok and the implementation of new functions improved the delay of up to 32.4% compared to previous system. It was suggested that the function to switch control timing of the system and generate saccadic eye movements improve human performance with use of Virtual Chameleon.

We developed a wearable system that provides a human user with the artificial oculomotor ability to control their eyes independently. We performed fundamental experiments to evaluate effects on the user's visual capabilities. However, providing two independent fields of view led to binocular rivalry in volunteers, which reduced performance compared to the control case. We added functions to provide the user fields of view based on saccadic movements to the system.
