In decision making related to protective action against hazard risk, scrutinization of hazard-related information seems favorable for accurate risk evaluation. It is, however, unknown how such a risk-scrutiny attitude is related to sensitivity in risk perception or the difference in the types of information (e.g., sensory vs. numerical). Furthermore, how these attitudes are related to evacuation-prone individual factors, which may inform the psychological mechanisms of these attitudes, remains unknown. To address these questions, we conducted an online experiment (n = 1,200) using evacuation decision-making task with 40 earthquake scenarios where tsunami risks were manipulated using sensory or numerical information. Factor analysis identified risk-sensitive attitude, risk-scrutiny attitude, and sensitivity to sensory (vs. numerical) information. Risk-sensitive attitude was positively related to a evacuation-prone trait, that is emotion regulation, while risk-scrutiny attitude was negatively related to another evacuation-prone trait, leadership. The results demonstrated the independence of risk-scrutiny attitude from risk-sensitive attitude, as well as their independence from information types. Importantly, our results supported the notion that the suppression of optimistic bias is critical for risk-sensitive attitude and that the motivation to resolve the cognitive dissonance may underlie the risk-scrutiny attitude and delayed protective response. The current results have implications for psychological theories of protective decision making and development of disaster communication and education systems for tsunami and potentially other types of disasters.

Videos are commonly used in disaster prevention education or communication. Some consider behavioral recommendations to have more motivating content than hazard mechanisms; these, however, have not been empirically tested. Perception of hazard risk is mediated by risk-sensitive and risk-scrutiny attitudes, but which attitude the videos influence has not been examined. In Experiment 1, we created sets of videos for two types of content and relevant control videos, and their effects on four motivation measures of the self-oriented model (i.e., self-relevance, attention, self-efficacy, and behavioral intention) were examined in the online survey. In Experiment 2, we compared the intervention effects of disaster prevention and control videos on the pre-post change of two types of attitudes using a scenario-based tsunami evacuation decision-making task. Consequently, disaster-prevention videos (vs. control videos) facilitated the four motivation measures irrespective of the content type and increased the risk-sensitive attitude during the evacuation decision-making from the tsunami. The revealed facilitatory effect of the videos on motivational and risk-sensitive aspects of evacuation response appears to be congruent with previously advocated advantages of videos or films. The current finding offers insights into the process and mechanism of the effect of disaster prevention videos, providing a robust empirical basis for promoting their use in disaster prevention education.

  • Five major outcomes of digitalization: relevance of a survival personality type during COVID-19 pandemic Reviewed

The COVID-19 pandemic required people to adapt rapidly to the digital transformation of society for social survival, which highlighted the divide between those who can and cannot digitalize. Previous studies investigated factors promoting adaptation to digitalization; however, outcomes from adaptation to a digitalized society have not been sorted into a parsimonious model, even though there should be several multifaceted outcomes (e.g., usefulness, economic profit, and social outcome), each of which is promoted by different factors. If the effects of individual background factors can be revealed, including the technical-environment and survival-relevant personality in relation to each outcome, it would help in the creation of a society where more people play an active role by adapting to digitalization. This study aimed to construct such a model by identifying major outcomes gained in a digitalized society and investigating individual factors that contribute to the degree of gain of each of these outcomes. Five dimensions were identified by online surveys and factor analysis: Socialization (outcomes derived from new social connections created online), Space–time (freedom from time and space constraints), Economics (monetary outcome by using digital services), and Information (ease and amount of acquisition of information) were the positive outcomes, whereas Loneliness (feelings of not being able to keep up with digitization) was identified as a negative outcome. We determined that technical-environmental factors (e.g., familiarity with digital techniques and the amount of money that can be used for digitalization) facilitated gain in four positive outcomes. Notably, leadership and conscientiousness facilitated the Socialization gain while etiquette suppressed it. These factors’ effects would reflect the importance of a personality trait prioritizing construction and maintenance of social relationships. This study implies that material outcomes (i.e., Space–time, Economics, and Information) are promoted by technical-environmental support, whereas social outcomes may additionally require motivation and a positive attitude for purposeful social engagement.

    Abstract

The hyperscanning technique, that is, simultaneous measurement of neural signals in more than one person, is a powerful research tool for understanding humans’ social interactions. In recent years, many studies have investigated interpersonal neural synchronization during various types of communication processes. However, there has been little focus on the impact of the presence of others without explicit social interaction, despite the mere presence of others having been suggested as influencing behavior. In this study, we clarify whether neural signals during a self-paced, repeated, addition task are synchronized when another individual is adjacent without direct interaction. Twenty pairs of participants were measured using a hyperscanning approach with near-infrared spectroscopy. The results show that interpersonal neural synchronization of the task-related signal in the left forehead region was enhanced under the condition of being adjacent to another participant. By contrast, a significant decrease in neural synchronization in the center of the forehead region, where increased neural synchronization is often reported in explicit communication, was observed. Thus, the results indicate that the adjacency of others modulates interpersonal neural synchronization in the task-related signal, and the effect on cognitive processing is different from that of explicit social interaction.

Critical thinking (CT) is important for consensus building. Although the practice of CT using debate is widely used to improve open-minded thought, the cognitive processes underlying this improvement remain poorly understood. Here, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was employed to assess how neural responses while considering another's opinion are changed by CT practice and to determine whether the cortical network showing activation changes related to personality traits is relevant to consensus building. A total of 52 healthy participants were divided into three groups for an intervention; the participants read another's reasoning regarding a controversial issue and judged whether this person's viewpoint was affirmative during fMRI measurements. The intervention required them to prepare speech texts from a designated viewpoint based on both themselves and others. Compared to the control group, the group who took another's perspective showed enhanced activation of the right parieto-frontal network, that has been implicated in belief update, cognitive reappraisal of emotion, and self-perspective inhibition. Additionally, activation of the orbitofrontal cortex was negatively correlated with a stubbornness index. The results provide the first neural evidence of the effects of CT practice and support the notion that open-minded thought underlies the benefits of this practice.

Although some students may have insufficient study skills at their admission, the educational program of a college should make them catch up with the classes. This article introduces a method focusing on the two basic study skills, that is, taking notes and keeping printed matters, where taking notes does not mean the technique of note taking but the action of taking notes. In this method, a stationary set is provided to each of the freshmen. By just teaching the students to use the stationary for taking notes and keeping the printed matters well arranged, they can constantly elevate their study skills. The results of placement/achievement tests have shown that the method can contribute to the improvement of the study skills.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), which provides a direct connection between the neural activity of human brain and machine, is being investigated in our study. In this paper, we examined the feasibility of using silent reading as a fundamental BCI trigger by measuring the real-time hemodynamic response during silent reading with Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). The results showed that hemodynamic response could be used as an ON/OFF switch during silent reading. This finding indicated that BCI control signals using Internal Speech Production can be put to practical use.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is an interface by which the human can directly operate the machinery using brain activity signals measured noninvasively. In this study, a BCI is developed based on the brain bloodstream change measured by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). So far we have processed the brain bloodstream changes during silent reading by the distance-type fuzzy reasoning method to get the BCI control signals. However, the fuzzy rules could not completely reflect the features of NIRS signals, which reduced the recognition ratio. Therefore, we analyze the signal characteristics of cerebral blood flow during silent reading in order to obtain more proper fuzzy rules. We measure the cerebral blood flow changes on both sides of the prefrontal cortex during silent reading task 4 times a week for 4 weeks and extract the peculiar cerebral blood flow change patterns as knowledge for reasoning.

The study proposes an autonomous control system based on the distance-type fuzzy reasoning method to realize the autonomy of robots by imitating the human behavioral strategies, which is extracted from the relationship between the human manipulation to the robots and the circumstances where the robots are in. We develop an experiment platform on an omni-directional mobile robot with a flat board. There is a target on the board and the task is to move a ball to the target by operating the robot. The human behavior strategy is extracted from the relationship between the human operation and the position of the ball. We attempt autonomous control of the robot based on the extracted behavior strategy using the distance-type fuzzy reasoning method.

In order to develop a near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) based brain-computer interface(BCI) system, we proposed a method to recognize task-related signal changes of NIRS signal using a fuzzy reasoning. Because a NIRS signal has several time-varying characteristics such as a fluctuation during baseline resting state and attenuation of task-related signal changes, the method reasons brain activity from relative signal changes by distance-type fuzzy reasoning method and outputs a switching signal. From an evaluation result, it was confirmed that the method outputted the switching signal in accordance with the task-related signal change.

Recently, an importance of neurorehabilitation based on findings of the brain plasticity has been widely recognized. In the present study, to apply a finding of the neuroscientific evidences for rehabilitation by walking, we measured changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during changing the posture, from sitting position to standing up, by a functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy, and compare those in rCBF with muscle activities of legs and lower abdomen measured by electromyography. From the results, a relationship between changes of rCBF on medial sensorymotor cortex and muscle activities of legs was observed during changing the posture.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is established as a communication system that controls a machine by measured neuronal activity of human brain. And, it is expected that a BCI contributes to the progress of the instrument for nursing and welfare. In this study, we propose a fundamental system of BCI based on Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) technique. And, a brain activity relating internal speech production is used as controlling signal for the system. The availability of the BCI system was demonstrated by experiment for multiple subjects.

Several guidance robots that safely guide for senior and handicapped persons at hospitals or welfare facilities have been developed. However, in order to guide a visually handicapped parsons safely, it is noted it that the implementation of the specific mechanism that was made to guide them should be required. In this study, we developed 2 kinds of guidance leads that conduct force information between user and the robot bidirectionally for our guidance robot. The characteristics of each guidance lead about usability and safety were evaluated by psychophysiological experiment.

Recent advances in robotics have produced several kinds guidance robot at the public places. However, the guidance functions of these robots assigned a focus to guiding a healthy person, and the functions were not effective to guide a visually handicapped person. Our long-term objective is to develop a guidance function for the visually handicapped person using force and auditory information. In the present paper, we proposed a dynamic control system of the guidance lead to feed back a force information effectively.

We carried out an fMRI study to investigate whether the same brain regions are involved in processing first and second languages. Twenty-eight right-handed native speakers of Japanese participated in this study. Subjects were instructed to read active and passive sentences in Japanese and English and to judge the plausibility of the sentence. As a result, we found that both similarites and differences between Japanese and English in terms of the regions involved in the processing of passive sentences. These results suggest that the processing of a second language exhibits both similarities and differences as contrasted with that of a first language.

In this study, we have attempted to depict "atmosphere of cooperative work" defined as the mutual influence of collaborators in the operation of a large-scale system through simultaneous biological measurements among multiple participants. The result revealed that interpersonal neural synchronization fluctuates with the presence of others even in the absence of explicit communication. In addition, in a collaborative task using simultaneous measurement of brain activity and pupil diameter, it was observed that interpersonal neural synchronization and pupil diameter fluctuated separately, reflecting the degree of engagement of the workers in the collaborative task and the existence of a direct cooperative relationship during the task. These results indicate that biological measurements of brain activity and pupil diameter can be used to visualize the "atmosphere of cooperative work".

In the present study, the functional framework to realize situation-adaptive system to enhance human performance has been proposed in order to increase the level of safety for nuclear power plant. The human behavior facing severe situation has been analyzed using smart grid simulation environment and the characteristic behavior of human has been clarified. Next, the human state estimation method using wearable device has been developed and it has been confirmed that the degradation of human performance can be detected based on the objective measurements. Finally, the differences of the human performance to deal with unexpected situations has been evaluated according to the directions given to subjects. The subjects who have been give strong direction to follow the prescribed procedures showed degraded performance when they faced the situations outside of the prescribed procedures.

To investigate the truth of the replacement of Homo Neanderthalensis (HN) by Homo Sapiens (HS), we adopt neurocognitive and computational neuroanatomical approaches. We developed an integrative analytical framework for elucidating the anatomical and functional differences of the brain between them. The results of morphometry showed that hemispheres of cerebellum were larger in HS than those in HN. Our neuroimaging studies also demonstrated that the cerebellum play an important role for variety of highly cognitive functions such as attention, language, working memory, social cognition, creativity. Moreover, we revealed positive correlation between cerebellar volume and some cognitive abilities in modern humans. The present study indicates that HS utilizes their brain more efficiently with employing the cerebellar functions, which maybe one of the possible causes for the replacement.
