    We studied cascaded backward terahertz-wave parametric oscillation (BW-TPO) to enhance the output THz-wave power. The pump beam converted to the photon pair of counter-propagating THz-wave and co-propagating idler beam. The idler beams also acted as a pump beam for the cascaded THz-wave generation. The oscillation threshold of cascaded process was reduced 77% compared with the primary one thanks to the spectrum overlaps of counter-propagating THz waves. Furthermore, optical injection seeding to the first idler beam provided threshold reduction of the primary one.     This paper presents examination of a backward Terahertz-wave (THz-wave) parametric oscillator (BW-TPO) with wide tunability in the sub-THz wave region (< similar to 1 THz). The simple and compact device has been demonstrated under a special optical parametric down-conversion found in a periodically poled lithium niobate. The potential property of the BW-TPO is expected to pave the way for THz-wave applications, especially a swept-source THz OCT with a higher depth-resolution because of a dynamically wide frequency-tuning range.

    Backward optical parametric oscillation has attracted attention for cavityless spectral narrowband generation based on perfect photon conversion. Few demonstrations have shown its potential from the aspect of nonlinear photonics; therefore, the mechanisms of momentum conservation among interacting light waves have been concealed by the restricted configuration under the phase-matching condition of periodically poled structures. Here, we unveil a tunable mechanism in the terahertz region by active control of the phase-matching condition. The tunability of backward terahertz-wave parametric oscillation is investigated using a quasi-collinear phase-matching model and its frequency range from the sub-terahertz to terahertz region is identified. Transform-limited terahertz-wave pulse is achieved simply by installing a device on the pump propagating line with no cavity. Moreover, the cascading terahertz-wave generation enhances the photon conversion efficiency, thus making nonlinear optics and its applications more promising. The results highlight new capabilities for using modern ferroelectric materials and encourage further research on nonlinear optics.

    We demonstrate a frequency-domain differential absorption spectroscopy in the terahertz (THz) range for gas sensing applications. Our system is based on an injection-seeded THz-wave parametric generator driven by a multi-furcated Nd:YAG microchip laser. Within a single excitation cycle of the laser, the is-TPG generates up to three narrowband THz-wave pulses that are separated from each other in time by 78 mu s and in frequency by 11 GHz, which is due to the spatial hole burning effect in the laser cavity. These pulses can be directly used to measure differential absorption signals, and first and second derivative spectra of target gas molecules without measuring reference spectra.

    We developed a security passengers gate using by terahertz-wave screening system. The security gate was based on a gas sensing system with an injection-seeded terahertz-wave parametric generator and was demonstrated with methanol gas in atmosphere detected as a phantom. The measurement was done within one second without disrupting foot traffic.

    A high transmission terahertz-wave quarter-wave plate (QWP) is demonstrated by double-layer split ring resonators (SRRs) with film metamaterial. The double-layer metallic patterns with rectangular SRR design provide freedom to use different resonant modes regarding to the polarization to introduce birefringence for the QWP. A transmittance of 0.8 is obtained from experiment with ellipticity of 0.99 at 0.98THz.

    We investigated backward terahertz-wave parametric oscillation (BW-TPO) and demonstrated efficient THz-wave generation via cascading wavelength conversion. The comprehensive analysis of input-output characteristics of BW-TPO showed the issues on high oscillation threshold intensity and its photon-conversion efficiency. We applied injection-seeding to BW-TPO for an idler wave to achieve threshold reduction and efficient photon-conversion, resulting demonstration of cascaded BW-TPO. As a result, output THz-wave energy enhanced over 100 times from previous results, corresponding to high-peak power over 100 W at the frequency of 0.3 THz.

    We demonstrated an injection-seeded terahertz-wave parametric generator (is-TPG) with capability of synchronization to other devices. A gain-switched laser diode as a pump source for terahertz-wave generation provided suppression of pulse jitter below 1 ns. The low time-jitter is-TPG demonstrated asynchronies spectrum sweep terahertz measurement with MEM-VCSEL as an injection seeder. This research project also studied photorefractive effect, suppression of phonon damping, and THz-wave generation based on DFG method for efficient optical to terahertz-wave conversion.

    The hydrogen-bonding distances in halogen-substituted stilbazolium derivative crystals, which are organic-nonlinear optical crystals, were quantitatively evaluated by using powder neutron diffraction for high-transmitted terahertz (THz) wave sources. The transmittance of the derivatives in the THz region became lower. In addition, the THz absorption at around 1 THz were dependent on the hydrogen-bonding interaction between the cation and the anion. Elongation of the interionic distances by changing the substituents seems to be effective in decreasing the absorption of the derivetive crystals in the THz region.

    Widely tunable THz-wave generation based on difference frequency generation and THz-wave up-conversion detection were demonstrated. As extending to lower frequency generated by DFG method, injection-seeding technique was applied. THz-wave generation with the tunability from 0.3 THz to 4 THz was demonstrated. To improve the signal/noise ratio for spectroscopic measurement, sensitive up-conversion detection was also demonstrated. As a result, minimum detectable THz-wave energy was 100 aJ/pulse, which was exceeding cryogenically cooled Si-bolometer.

    申請者は30Wを越える側面励起Nd:YVO_4位相共役増幅器とカスケードに配置した第2側面励起Nd:YVO_4増幅器を用いて100W級ピコ秒パルスレーザーシステムの構築を行ってきた。本年度はカスケードに配置した第2側面励起Nd:YVO_4増幅器の熱収差解析と最適設計を行うと共に、側面励起Nd:YVO_4位相共役増幅器内に2つの側面励起Nd:YVO_4増幅器を用いることで高出力化を行った。
    側面励起型Nd:YVO_4増幅器は高い吸収係数(809nmで30cm^<-1>)と大きな誘導放出断面積(2.0×10^<-18>/cm^2)によって励起端面付近に非常に大きな反転分布密度を形成することで極限までに高い利得を得ることができる。しかし励起端面付近の極端な温度上昇による増幅光の波面歪みが問題となる。そこでカスケードに配置した第2側面励起Nd:YVO_4増幅器における熱効果の数値シミュレーションを行い、波面歪みを実効的に無視できる光学系を設計した。その結果を学術論文誌Optics Expressに発表した。現在はさらに高出力化を図り最大出力105Wを得ている。
    また更なる高出力化を狙うためには側面励起Nd:YVO_4位相共役増幅器の高出力化が重要である。側面励起Nd:YVO_4増幅器は寄生発振による利得の飽和、極端な温度上昇による結晶の物理的破壊などにより1つの増幅器への励起エネルギーに限界があった。そこで2つの側面励起Nd:YVO_4増幅器を用いた位相共役増幅器を構築することで2倍の励起エネルギーを可能とした。その結果側面励起Nd:YVO_4位相共役増幅器で>46Wの出力を得た。これは位相共役鏡を用いたレーザーシステムで他に比肩するもののない出力である。この内容については国際学会CLEO2010(California, USA)にて発表が決定している。
