    Abstract

The hardening of K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) ceramics with the addition of Ag2O and CuO and the crystal-orientation behavior of KNN and CuO-added KNN powders under a high magnetic field were investigated. Ag2O reduced the degree of compositional deviation of KNN ceramics and increased their density. Additionally, the piezoelectric characteristics were improved by the addition of Ag2O. CuO functioned as a sintering aid for KNN, and the CuO-added KNN ceramics increased the grain size and mechanical quality factor by up to approximately 1200. The simultaneous addition of Ag2O (0.01 mol) and CuO (0.01 mol) to KNN resulted in hardening with a mechanical quality factor of 1400 owing to the synergistic contributions of each additive. Under a high magnetic field of 5 T, the KNN powder and CuO (0.01 mol)-added KNN powder exhibited b - and c -axes orientation parallel to the magnetic field, which is expected to enhance the piezoelectric properties through crystal orientation.

A novel linear motion ultrasonic motor, which uses a single resonance mode driven by a single phase and has the same motor characteristics for operation in reverse directions, is developed. An in-plane breathing mode in the square plate is strongly driven by the transverse effect of a piezoelectric ceramic. A stator resonator consists of twin square plates linked by V-shaped beams. Only one side of the square plate can be excited by the resonance of the breathing mode, when the other passive side plate is electrically opened so that the effective elasticities and the resonant frequencies between both plates are different; as a result, the friction edge of the resonator vibrates in a slant locus to move a load slider. The reverse operation is easily obtained by switching the driving side of the square plates. We designed the stator resonator by FEM analysis and fabricated a prototype for our experiment. The prototype motor showed good characteristics, for example, a moving slider velocity of 100 mm/s, a thrust force of 3.5 N, and an efficiency of 30% when the preload was 10 N, the input effective voltage was 5 V, and the input power was 1.2 W.

We investigated why the nonlinear behaviors of (Bi,Na,Ba)(Ti,Mn)O3 (BNBTM) ceramics and (Sr,Ca) 2 NaNb 5 O 15 (SCNN) ceramics occur in comparison with Pb(Zr,Ti)O3-based (PZT) ceramics by evaluating their high-power properties with the distinction between mechanical nonlinearity and temperature dependence of properties. The equivalent stiffness of PZT decreased with increasing vibration velocity and sample temperature. However, the equivalent stiffnesses of BNBTM and SCNN did not depend on vibration velocity, they decreased and increased linearly with an increase in sample temperature, respectively. The nonlinear behavior of PZT originated from the soft-spring effect through which the mechanical nonlinearity was induced and the temperature dependence of stiffness was enhanced. On the other hand, it appeared that the nonlinear behaviors of BNBTM and SCNN originated from the apparent soft- and hard-spring effects through which the temperature dependence of stiffness was induced. The temperature characteristic of elasticity is important for controlling the high-power properties. ? 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

We investigated the high-power properties of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with (Sr,Ca) 2 NaNb 5 O 15 (SCNN), and clarified the properties of miniature cantilever-type ultrasonic motor of array-type multilayer piezoelectric ceramics of SCNN (SCNN-A-MLPC) as the lead-free-piezoelectric application. The jump phenomena of SCNN ceramics with constant-voltage driving produced mirror-reversed images relative to those of Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 -based (PZT) ceramics. The nonlinear behavior was caused by the hard-spring effect of SCNN ceramics which possess notable elastic properties among the piezoelectric materials. Under high vibration velocity with constant-motional-current driving, SCNN ceramics showed that the temperature rise was lower than that of PZT ceramics and the degradation of the quality factor was limited, resulting in a gradual increase in the equivalent mechanical resistance. SCNN ceramics have superior high-power properties. The cantilever-type ultrasonic motor was fabricated using SCNN-A-MLPC and the driving properties were evaluated. The output power of the motor increased linearly with increasing input power up to 110 mW without heat generation. The output power density was high in comparison with that of the commercialized motor of PZT ceramics. Furthermore, the refined motor with build in preload mechanism was fabricated and the driving properties were evaluated. The motor was able to rotate with 200 rpm and 40 μN m at 2.6 V p-p . It appeared that the motors have a high potential as an environmental friendly piezoelectric device with excellent properties, reflecting the high-power properties of SCNN ceramics. ? 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The high-power piezoelectric characteristics of c-axis crystal-oriented (Sr,Ca) 2 NaNb 5 O 15 (SCNN) ceramics were studied by the constantmotional-current driving method, and compared with those of the randomly oriented ceramics superior to those of hard Pb(Ti,Zr)O 3 (PZT)ceramics. The c-axis crystal-oriented SCNN ceramic showed a large Lotgering factor of 0.98. The effective piezoelectric constant d33 was 260 pm/V, as large as those of hard PZT ceramics. In the 31-mode of the rectangular plate, the quality factor, Q, was five times larger than that of the randomly oriented ceramic, and almost constant at approximately 3300 up to the maximum vibration velocity of 1.84 m/s rms. The resonant frequency change was also stable up to a vibration velocity of 1.84 m/s rms. The change was approximately +0.05% in the driving range, which was much smaller than that of +0.8% of the randomly oriented ceramic. The high-power piezoelectric characteristics were also clarified by a comparison with the mechanical characteristics. Therefore, the highly c-axis crystal-oriented SCNN ceramics are good candidates for high-power piezoelectric applications in comparison with hard PZT ceramics. ? 2012 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

We studied the following to clarify the design rule of the miniature cantilever-type ultrasonic motor using lead-free array-type multilayer piezoelectric ceramics, which is (Sr,Ca) 2 NaNb 5 O 15 . The relationship between the motor properties and stator vibrator dimensions was investigated by the finite element method and vibration analysis. The motor properties mainly depended on the cantilever sizes. The motor properties can be especially controlled from the revolution-speed-oriented type to the torque-oriented type by adjusting the vamplate radius of the cantilever. As a result, the design rule was clarified. In accordance with the design rule, the lead-free torque-oriented motor was fabricated and its properties were evaluated. The driving properties of this motor changed to the torque-oriented characteristics, such as the ratio of the maximum torque to the maximum speed was over 1200-fold of that of the motor fabricated in a previous study. It appeared that the driving properties of the lead-free cantilever-type motor can be controlled by using the design rule. ? 2010 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

An ordinal force-feedback device mainly employs an electromagnetic motor(EMM), and it is excellent in the expression of an elastic feeling. However, it is not easy to express the sense of hardness and roughness. An actuator system(AS) using multilayered piezoelectric actuators has a characteristic which is contrary to AS using EMM. The objective of this study is the development of ideal actuator system for a haptic display. In this paper, a hybrid actuator system combining an EMM with a piezoelectric motor was proposed and examined. As a results, it was confirmed to be able to express hardness and softness by changing the combination of actuators.

In this paper, we propose a novel rotor embedded disk type multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) spherical ultrasonic motor (SUSM). The MDOF-SUSM consists of a spherical rotor and a stator vibrator with all-in-one structure, the spherical rotor is embedded in a stator vibrator with a spherical inner surface, and a motor shaft is mounted on the rotor. The stator vibrator with piezoceramic disks and plates stuck on its surfaces can excite five vibration modes, independently and simultaneously. The spherical rotor of the motor can rotate around three axes by combining two vibration modes among the five vibration modes. This paper describes the basic construction and the operating principle of the rotor embedded type MDOF-SUSM, modal analysis results about the stator vibrator, and some measurement results from the first trial manufacture to verify the operating principle and research the Z-axis rotation. The MDOF-SUSM in this study has possibilities of a simple structure, compact and small size, lightweight, and a large torque-to-weight ratio.

The method of positioning of a levitated object above many aligned stator vibrators was proposed. From an experiment, an object moved to the next stator vibrator under the condition that the displacement of the next stator was over 1.5 times larger than that of the stator levitating the object. Hereafter, it is necessary to analyze the mechanism that the levitated object moves toward the next stator vibrator which has large displacement. Moreover, the reduction of an oscillation of the levitated object has to be considered for an accurate positioning. A rotary type NCS-USM shown in Fig. 7 can be proposed. Its operating principle is the same as NCS-USM. This motor has a possibility of high torque compared with ordinal non-contact USM using traveling wave.

We have proposed the motor using a piezoelectric ceramic multilayer vibrator with diagonally symmetric form to construct a small size single-phase-drive motor. A diagonally symmetric form plate vibrating in the 1st longitudinal and the 2nd flexural modes which are coupled in the vibrator is presented. In this paper, we show a new supporting jig of small symmetrical vibrator and describe the experimental results for the trial ultrasonic motor (vibrator length: 15mm, rotor diameter: 1mm) whose revolution speed exceeds 9,000rpm, which is obtained by input voltage and power of 3Vrms and 300mW, respectively.

For analyzing intuitively and macroscopically the performance of an ultrasonic actuator, electromechanical equivalent circuits have been proposed and applied. However, the equivalent circuits include some nonlinear elements which are difficult to calculate directly by a circuit simulator. In this paper, to express the force transmission from a stator to rotor, the use of a voltage-controlled-voltage-source (VCVS) element provided on an ordinal circuit simulator is newly devised. Consequently, contact force and frictional one changing momentarily can be calculated with a commercial circuit simulator. As an example, the equivalent circuit of a vibrating-piece-type ultrasonic actuator was designed and simulated. It was obtained that simulated results of the transient response of rotation by preload control had good agreement with the experimental one.

An internal coupling effect resulting from the crystal anisotropy of LiNbO_3 can be applied to a single phase driven ultrasonic motor. We have used the rectangular stator vibrator with the length-width ratio of W/L=0.255 to obtain the mode-coupling between the in-plane longitudinal 1st and flexural 2nd modes. The rotation direction can be changed by selecting one of the two coupling-modes. However, big differences for vibration and motor characteristics exist between each coupling-mode. In this study, we inspect the motor design in another coupling condition of around W/L=0.8, and made trial motors using the stator vibrator of W/L=0.849. The new design of vibrator improved evenness of the electromechanical coupling factor between the modes. The motor which drives the rotor with a short-side of the stator shows that the rotation characteristics of both directions is similar in wide range of the preload force.

The contact type of an ultrasonic motor (USM) is usually operated under constant preload. It is well-known that a preload affects the performance of USM. However, there is no electrical preload control system, and the preload has not been utilized in a control. By a preload control, USM will possibly have a new performance e.g. the improvement of a transient response, the realization of torque free state for haptic interface. In order to change the preload of USM, the authors developed an ultrasonic actuator which can electrically control a preload. From some experiments, it was confirmed that this actuator can change a preload over wide range and that revolution speed and torque were widely controllable by a preload control.

The double-mode miniature cantilever-type ultrasonic motor was fabricated using the array-type multilayer piezoelectric ceramics (array-type MLPC) of (Sr, Ca)_2NaNb_5O_<15> (SCNN) such as Pb-free piezoelectric materials, and the electrical driving properties were investigated. The array-type MLPC was arranged in a 2x2 matrix on the actuators. The ultrasonic motor of SCNN array-type MLPC started to rotate at 1.7V_<p-p,>, and showed such characteristics as revolution speed of Ω_0=1000 rpm, a torque of T_0=2.6μNm at 9V_<p-p>. On the other hand, the motor using Pb (Zr, Ti)O_3-Pnb(Zn, Nb)O_3(PZT) showed Ω_0=1000 rpm, a torque of T_0=2.6μNm at 1V_<p-p>. SCNN motor was not so different from PZT motor, however the SCNN motor needed 10 times as high voltage as the PZT motor. By using the array-type MLPC, the driving voltage was reduced by a half, and the driving properties were improved.

The existence of the coupling-modes is confirmed by experimentally and the two vibration modes show the same results as the analysis by FEM. The characteristics of the trial motor using the vibrator are presented. We have confirmed that the motor using a piezoelectric multilayer vibrator is suitable for a high revolution speed motor at low input voltage and has relatively high efficiency characteristic.

A ring-type vibrator made of piezoelectric ceramics with an electrode divided into two along the diameter can excite an radial vibration and nonaxisymmetric one at the same time. The speed of ultrasonic linear motor can be easily controlled by the independent adjustment of each vibration mode, but that has not been considered in this linear motor. This paper describes that the excitation voltage for ((1,1))-mode can be linearly controlled with keeping the excitation voltage for (R,1)-mode constant by independently adjusting phase difference and voltages applied to both electrodes. The independent excitation of both modes can be realized and the speed of a slider can be linearly controlled.

This paper deals with an ultrasonic motor using single crystal LiNbO_3 as a lead-free piezo-material. A single phase drive ultrasonic motor is suitable for miniaturization. Thus, the authors have proposed a mode-coupling vibrator to obtain a single phase motor using a parallelogram shape as same construction using piezo-ceramic. However, the parallelogram vibrator has problems that the contact point for the rotor is easily sifted by a preload force. Additionally, the crystal characteristics are not utilized enough in its structure. In this paper, we propose a LiNbO_3 crystal motor of mode-couping symmetrical rectangular vibrator using an X-rotated Y-cut wafer with additional rotation in the y'-axis. The construction of a trial motor which is designed using finite element method analysis, and its experimental results are described.

Ordinary ultrasonic actuators have an external preload mechanism using a spring. Support and preload mechanisms of a stator vibrator comprise some component parts. Such a structure prevents to make an ultrasonic actuator compact. The objective of this study is to make a small ultrasonic motor which can be easily miniaturized. Simple preload mechanism and support were realized by forming a stator vibrator and a flat spring for preload on an elastic metal plate bent into L-shape. From trial constructions of an ultrasonic spindle motor, the high-speed revolution of nearly 500rps was obtained.

For actualization of the monolithic triaxial gyrosensor, we have proposed a threefold rotatory symmetric form vibrator using quartz crystal Z-cut wafer which can be formed to the complex shape by the chemical etching. In the previously proposed vibrator, however, an etching residue brings the bilateral asymmetry on the detecting arms. The asymmetry causes the coupling among some vibration modes. Additionally, the previous vibrator has a high driving resistance which makes the self oscillation difficult. Therefore, we have designed the modified vibrator to improve the structural symmetry and to decrease the driving resistance. The modified vibrator has the improved mirror symmetry as well as the threefold symmetry, and also has the modified driving beams with through holes. Measurement results of electrical characteristics for the trial vibrators indicate that the improved vibrator is about 1/49 times smaller than the conventional one in the equivalent resistance of the driving-mode. Consequently, we found that the newly designed vibrator has higher symmetry and low driving resistance which will make self oscillation easy.

Lead-free piezo-electric material is promoted to use because of its less influence to the environment. The authors selected, as a lead-free piezo-electric material, LiNbO_3 single crystal which has the high electromechanical coupling coefficient and the advanced high power characteristics, and the authors also have studied the rectangular ultrasonic motor using LiNbO_3. As the results, it has been obtained that this ultrasonic motor can achieve high speed revolution with low electric power and has the possibility of the practical use. Hence, in this study, the square plate ultrasonic motor has been investigated as another type ultrasonic motor. In the piezoelectric ceramics, the equivalent two degenerated vibrations in the square plate have been used because of the easier designing.. In the LiNbO_3 square plate, the equivalent two degenerated vibrations can be also used by selecting the suitable cutting angle. Moreover, since LiNbO_3 is the an-isotropic material, even in the non-resonance frequency range, the degenerated mode-like vibrations have been observed, and the ultrasonic motor operation has been also observed. In this paper, the experimental results which have been obtained from two trial ultrasonic motors using each vibration mode; that is, the degenerated mode or the degenerated mode-like vibrations, respectively.

A powder-supplying device using the bending vibration mode of a piezoelectric disk with a two-step cylindrical projection at its center is described. The device has simple structure by which powder on the surface of the vibrator flows out the tip of the projection. Two degeneration modes of BH vibration of the disk were considered. The structure of the vibrator and the vibration mode by FEM are shown. Two kinds of powder were tested in the study, one is fly-ash (D_<p50>=15μm), the others are several kinds of white fused alumina and their powder-supplying characteristics were measured. The results show that the device can supply the powder composed of its particle size smaller than the size of 10 urn at flow rate of less than 1 mg/s.

We investigate the gyro-sensor which is composed of a quartz crystal resonator in order to detect multi-axis angular velocities. In this case, the research point is in the vibration problem of a quartz crystal resonator in three-axis directions. In other words, when such a gyro-sensor is composed concretely, degenertion of multi-resonance modes having vibration freedoms on the three-axis directions is required. In order to make clear this composition condition, we simulated vibrational characteristics of a quartz crystal tuning fork resonator using the ready made FEM software of ANSYS. The result has proved that the couplings among multi-resonance are found due to anisotropic quartz crystal material costants. That is, such couplings can not be avoided when the gyro-sensor to detect multi-axis angular velocities is composed using a quartz crystal resonator, and therefore the realization of such a gyro-sensor has been found not to be easy. This paper deals with FEM simulation results on the construction of such a gyro-sensor using a quartz crystal trident-type tuning fork resonator, and reports some reference deta for construction of a quartz crystal multi-axis gyro-sensor.

This paper deals with a new construction of vibratory gyro-sensor using a flexural same-form double-mode disk resonator having an additional mass. This vibratory gyro-sensor can be supported at its center of gravity, and it is flatly equipped to meet at right angle to the axis of angular velocity. In the first part of this paper, are described the structure of vibratory gyro-sensor and its principle of operation. The second part contains the experimental result of a prototpe gyro-sensor. The result has proved that the disk-resonator proposed by us surely operated as a gyro-sensor.

As the shoulder joint of a small humanoid, the high power sandwich-type spherical ultrasonic motor (SUSM) excited by multilayered piezoelectric actuators was devised and examined. The maximum torque and torque-weight ratio increased 25 times (approximately 2N.m) and 20% more than those of previous SUSM, respectively. The SUSMs using the spherical stator were also devised, and the operating principle was confirmed by some experiments. Possibility of realization of SUSM with torque-free state generated by the control of friction force between the rotor and stator was experimentally considered. An arm attached on the spherical rotor rotated by a servo motor and two stators jointed by piezoelectric clutches was used as a substitute for the shoulder joint using the SUSM. As a result, the natural swing of the arm was able to be realized by applying momentary friction driving force periodically to the arm while that was swinging in torque-free mode.

Driving circuit and other additional circuits of LiNbO3 piezoelectric transformer have been studied for achieving small sized-high efficiency AC-DC power supply. Switching device MOSFET has capacitances between each two electric terminals, where the terminals are Gate, Source and Drain. Because of these capacitances, switching efficiency of MOSFET becomes very low at the frequency of several hundred kHz for driving piezoelectric transformer. In this study, switching circuit which is little influenced by these capacitances has been invented. By the experiment, it has been shown that newly developed switching circuit gives useful results. To realize further improvement on efficiency and miniaturization of piezoelectric transformer application circuit, the effect of additional inductance and charging battery as smoothing device of rectifier circuit have been examined, and some improvements have been achieved.

A hybrid system using piezoelectric brake (PB), ultrasonic motor(USM) and electromagnetic motor(EMM), which have different characteristics, successfully achieved to represent the realistic feeling with wide ranges of force. The combination and control method of the actuators were examined by virtual models produced in personal computer. The feelings of reaction and roughness were able to be represented enough with friction control by using only PB. The EMM and USM were suitable to represent an elastic force and repulsive force, respectively, which needed sudden acceleration. Moreover, the hybrid system extended to two-degree-of-freedom motion enabled a two-dimensional operation. The testers' evaluation of the hybrid system was high. Hence, the objective of this study was almost achieved.

This study aims to achieve a miniaturized and high efficiency AC-DC converter without the wiring, by using the single-crystal piezoelectric transformer. As the results of the analysis and measurement, it has been found that the piezoelectric transformer with very high efficiency of about 95% can be achieved. Next, for obtaining the high-performance driving circuit of the piezoelectric transformer, the switching characteristics of the MOSFET switching circuits have been examined in detail in the high-frequency range from around 100kHz to 900kHz. Moreover, the measuring system has been constructed to measure precisely the performance characteristics of the piezoelectric transformer, by controlling the unstable non-linear phenomena appearing during the practical high-power driving of the piezoelectric transformer.
